Mary Mickelson, the mother of PGA Tour star and San Diego native Phil Mickelson, has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it was reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
This news come on the heels of the same diagnosis for Mickelson's wife, Amy, six weeks ago. Amy had surgery last Wednesday at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Tex., the same hospital where Mary will have surgery this Friday.
Mary and her husband, Phil Sr., still live in the San Diego home they raised all three of their children in. The family has been a major presence during many of Phil's most important PGA Tour triumphs, including all three of his major championship victories.
While he has not spoken publicly since finishing tied for second at the U.S. Open two weeks ago, Mickelson did say at that time that it was "highly unlikely" that he would play in the British Open later this month. It remains unclear what Mickelson's schedule will be for the rest of the season.
