Aussie Matt Smith began the final 36 holes of the Los Angeles Men’s City Championship eight shots behind leader Tim Hogarth, who seemed on his way to winning the event for the seventh time in his illustrious amateur career.
Smith, a member of the men’s golf team at Texas Tech University, had other ideas. He posted 67-66 over the weekend at Rancho Park Golf Course’s par-72 layout, storming up the leaderboard to finish at 275 and best Hogarth and Ryan Indovina of Costa Mesa by a stroke.
Castaic’s Ryan Weltig, who finished in third place two strokes back of Smith, had the tournament’s low round, a 64 on Saturday. All four rounds of the 72-hole event were held at Rancho Park from June 11-14.
