Without full-time LPGA Tour status for 2009, Wie will go back to qualifying school

Sectional round begins Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Rancho Mirage’s Mission Hills Country Club

By Eli MillerPublished: September, 2008

When Michelle Wie won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links title as a 13-year-old in 2003, many wondered if she could become the greatest female golfer ever.

But the one-time wunderkind hasn’t claimed a victory since then, and now a professional career marked by early success and marred by controversy will take another interesting turn – a trip to qualifying school.

Lacking full-time status for the LPGA Tour in 2009, Wie will compete in sectional qualifying at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage beginning Tuesday, Sept. 16. The top 30 players after four rounds at the Palmer and Dinah Shore courses will advance to the final stage of qualifying school, to be held at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. from Dec. 1-7.

"We’re excited about having her," said Mission Hills PGA director of golf Ben Dobbs. "It certainly will be one of the biggest crowds we’ve had for LPGA Q-School. I think it’s going to bring attention to some of the players in the field, too."

All four rounds at Mission Hills will be open to spectators, and there will be no admission cost. Click here for more information on the Rancho Mirage facility.

By virtue of mostly sponsor’s exemptions, Wie has played in seven LPGA events this season, making four cuts. She has earned $62,763, putting her in 116th place on the money list. The top 80 players each year retain playing privileges for the following campaign.

The Honolulu, Hawaii native likely wouldn’t have found herself in this situation without a disqualification at the State Farm Classic in July. In contention after two rounds, Wie failed to sign her scorecard immediately after her second round and was disqualified. LPGA officials couldn’t alert her of the infraction until after the completion of the third round (if her third-round score had counted, she would have been one stroke behind the leader entering the final round).

Wie earned over $600,000 during her 2006 LPGA Tour campaign. One of her best finishes came at Mission Hills, where she finished tied for third at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. But her 2007 campaign was hampered by a wrist injury and inconsistent play.

Many have criticized Wie for her continued forays in men’s professional tournaments. She has played in 14 men’s tour events, missing the cut in all but one – the Asian Tour’s SK Telecom Open in 2006. The PGA Tour’s Sony Open, a tournament that had offered her a sponsor’s exemption each year since 2004, did not offer her a spot in the field this year.
