Michelle Wie’s third-round score at LPGA sectional qualifying school doesn’t look as good as her marks from the first two days, but it was still effective. After two under-par tallies to open the 72-hole event, including a tournament-low 65 Wednesday, Wie struggled to a 2-over-par 74 Thursday on the Dinah Shore course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage. But after starting the day in second place, she stands fourth on the leaderboard heading into tomorrow’s final round. Barring catastrophe, the 18-year-old will advance to the final stage of Q-School, which will be held Dec. 3-7 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The top 30 players and ties in the sectional field move on — Wie is at 7-under par, and the current cut line is at 3-over. South Korea’s Sun-Ju Ahn shot an even-par 72 in the final group with Wie and is now tied for first at 12-under with Anna Nordqvist, whose 67 was the lowest mark of the third round. Megan Heckeroth of Los Angeles continued her steady play, shooting a 1-over 73 and standing tied for 11th at 2-under par heading to the final 18. Thousand Palms’ Dana Bates is tied for 17th at even par after a 74. The final-round pressure figures to be high for other players with Southern California connections, particularly recent Pepperdine graduate Leanne Bowditch and Rancho Mirage’s Caryn Wilson. After opening with a 69, Bowdith posted her second-straight 75 and is right on the cut at 3-over par. Wilson, who began the day in fifth place, ballooned to an 81 and is one stroke back at 4-over. Others needing to climb the leaderboard include San Diego’s Jamie Park (T46), former USC players Dewi Claire Schreefel (T41) and Paola Moreno (T52), and Gina Umeck of Redlands (T61).
