Wie jumps into second place after two rounds at Mission Hills

Southern California players also establish strong position in LPGA sectional qualifying

BY ELI MILLERPublished: September, 2008

Michelle Wie may not be talking to the media during LPGA sectional qualifying in Rancho Mirage, but her game is speaking volumes.

The 18-year-old carded a tournament-low 65 in her second round on the Arnold Palmer course at Mission Hills Country Club Wednesday, jumping into second place at 9-under par with 36 holes remaining.

Wie, who shot a 2-under-par 70 in Tuesday’s first round, told her agent she would not speak to reporters until the conclusion of the tournament Friday.

South Korean Sun-Ju Ahn, also playing the Palmer layout, shot her second-straight 66 and remains in first place at 12-under.

Thirteen golfers concluded the second round in 70th place at 6-over par, meaning 82 players have advanced for the tournament’s final two rounds on the Dinah Shore course. The top 30 and ties after Friday’s fourth round will advance to the final stage of Q-School, which will be held Dec. 3-7 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Notable Southern California competitors include Rancho Mirage’s Caryn Wilson (68, fifth place), Los Angeles’ Megan Heckeroth (70, tied for ninth) and Thousand Palms’ Dana Bates (71, tied for 13th).

Recent Pepperdine graduate Leanne Bowditch (T17), San Diego’s Jamie Park (T38), and former USC competitors Paola Moreno (T38) and Dewi Claire Schreefel (T70) also advanced, along with Gina Umeck (T70) of Redlands. Altadena’s Courtney Erdman and Moah Chang of Los Angeles each finished at 7-over par and missed qualifying by a stroke.
