Three Southern California schools come up short at NCAA Division-I Men’s Golf Championships

University of San Diego loses in playoff for final match-play spot, USC and UCLA finish outside top 10.

USC, UCLA and the University of San Diego came into last week’s NCAA Division-I Men’s Golf Championships at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., with high hopes. However, all three schools failed to qualify for the final match-play portion of the event by finishing behind the top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play.

The Toreros came the closest, losing a playoff for the final match-play spot to Stanford. USD had tied with the Cardinal and Arizona State for eighth place at 4-over par in stroke play, but fell one stroke shy in the extra competition.

Augusta State advanced through three rounds of match play to win the national championship for the first time in school history, defeating Oklahoma State in the finals.

In the second year of the NCAA’s half-stroke play, half-match play championship format, Toreros sophomore Alex Ching placed second in the medal standings with an 8-under total. His effort included a 6-under-par 66 in the second round, tied for the lowest score of any player in the 30-team field.

Bruins sophomore Gregor Main tied for ninth at 4-under, while Buena Park resident and Stanford team member Sihwan Kim tied for 14th at 3-under par. Kim went on to lose his match against Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway in the quarterfinals, as the Cowboys soundly defeated the Cardinal 4-1 to move on.
