Three Southern California teams in, three out for NCAA D-I Men’s Golf Championships

CSU-Northridge’s Nick Delio advances as an individual.

Of the six Southern California collegiate men’s golf squads that qualified for last week’s NCAA Division I Regionals, three were able to advance to next month’s NCAA Championships at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Leading the way from the West Regional were USC and the University of San Diego, which finished second and third, respectively, at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. Gunner Wiebe tied for fifth at 3-under par to lead the Toreros, while teammates Alex Ching and Kennetg McCready tied for 13th at even par. The Trojans’ effort was all about balance, as all five players — Martin Trainer, T.J. Vogel, Sam Smith, Matthew Giles and Steve Lim — placed between 21st and 29th.

The University of Washington, the host squad for the regional, won by a whopping 29 strokes over USC.

At the East Regional, held at The Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn., UCLA stormed into the NCAA Championships with a tournament-low team score of 7-under 273 in the final round. Keying that charge for the Bruins was freshman and Beverly Hills resident Mario Clemens, whose closing 3-under 67 propelled him into a tie for eighth alongside teammate Alex Kim of Fullerton.

Two local schools, San Diego State and UC-Irvine, failed to advance out of the Southwest Regional contested at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee. Both schools tied for eighth at 35-over par.

At the Southwest Regional, Cal State-Northridge junior and Valencia native Nick Delio competed as an individual and took home medalist honors at 3-under par, meaning he’ll move on to the NCAA Championships. Daniel Miernicki, a sophomore at the University of Oregon who hails from San Diego County, finished second to Delio and helped the Ducks to the team title.

Delio is the first Matadors player ever to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

In the South Central Regional at Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Tex., Pepperdine was poised to advance after a solid 2-under team mark through 36 holes but faltered on the last day with a 15-over score to wind up in seventh and without a Championships berth.

The NCAA Championships begin Tuesday, June 1 with 72 holes of stroke play followed by the top eight teams advancing to match play.
