Five local schools qualified for the competition, which is broken into three regional sites before the final tournament. Leading the contingent are Los Angeles powers UCLA and USC, which are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the Golfweek team rankings. UCLA earned the No. 1 seed in the Central regional, which will be played May 7-9 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus. USC, on the other hand, is staying closer to home. The Trojans are ranked No. 2 in the West regional and will head to Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course. The Sun Devils won the Pac-10 Women’s Golf Championship on Sunday April 26 to claim the No. 1 spot in the Golfweek rankings and the No. 1 seed at their home course. Three other Southern California teams will compete against USC in the desert (seed in parentheses): Pepperdine (4), UC-Irvine (9) and Long Beach State (15). Alice Kim, a Walnut native and sophomore at UC-Davis, qualified for the West regional as an individual. There are 108 players at each regional site — 21 teams (five players per team) and three individuals. The top eight teams at each 54-hole regional site qualify for the 72-hole final, which will be held May 19-22 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. The top two individuals from each site whose teams don’t otherwise qualify also advance. For a complete breakdown of the field, visit NCAA.com.
