USC, Johnson both come in second at NCAA D-I Women’s Golf Championships

Song misses birdie bid to tie eventual champion Purdue on final hole.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: May, 2010

The USC women’s golf team came in second place at last week’s NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships, one stroke behind champion Purdue University at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.

Also, La Quinta resident and Arizona State freshman Jennifer Johnson finished second to Oklahoma State’s Caroline Hedwall in the individual competition.

Trojans sophomore Jennifer Song, who led her squad with a tie for fifth place individually, missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have allowed USC to tie the Boilermakers and force a playoff for the national title.

“Jennifer gave us a chance to tie. The putt just didn’t go down,” Trojans head coach Andrea Gaston told USCTrojans.com. “This wasn't on anybody’s shoulders. All of us left some shots out there. We win together and we lose together. It was a special team and I know it was a difficult loss for all of us. We expected to win it.”

Gaston has led the Trojans to two national titles during her prolific tenure, in 2003 and 2008. USC’s runner-up finish marks the fifth season in a row the team has placed inside the top four at the NCAA Championships.

“We fought with all our hearts,” added Gaston.

That missed putt and subsequent tap-in for par proved to be the last strokes of Song’s collegiate career, as the defending U.S. Women’s Amateur and Women’s Amateur Public Links champion has announced she will turn pro this summer. Her 15 rounds in the 60s — in only two college seasons — are the most in USC history.

Senior Belen Mozo, who had 13 such rounds in her four years with the Trojans, finished her stellar career with a tie for 21st. Junior Lizette Salas tied for 27th.

Johnson entered the final round with a one-stroke lead over Hedwall but couldn’t keep pace. While Hedwall made five birdies against only one bogey to close, Johnson finished her tournament with three bogeys in the last seven holes after opening with three birdies and only one bogey in the first 11 holes.

Johnson concluded ay 8-under par, four strokes behind Hedwall.

Other scores:

• UCLA finished sixth at 17-over par. Freshman Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights led the Bruins with a tie for 27th at 5-over.

• Irvine’s Victoria Park, a freshman at Oklahoma State University, also tied for 27th.

• Despite a tie for 15th from Westlake High School alumna Danielle Kang, Pepperdine struggled, finishing tied for 14th at 34-over par.
