UCLA, USC, Pepperdine advance to NCAA Championships

Trojans capture fourth regional title in last five years.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: May, 2010

Three of the 24 teams that qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships hail from the Los Angeles area.

They are USC, which won the NCAA Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., UCLA and Pepperdine. The Bruins finished second to Arizona in the West Regional at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, while the Waves finished seventh in the East Regional at Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, N.C., to qualify.

UC-Irvine finished 16th in the West and failed to qualify, while San Diego State concluded play in the Central in 13th place.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. The 72-hole event will count the lowest four team scores for each five-person squad.

USC has won national titles in 2003 and 2008, while UCLA has triumphed in 1991 and 2004.

The Trojans were led by junior Lizette Salas, who posted a 54-hole total of 5-over par to finish second overall. The rest of her teammates — Belen Mozo, Inah Park, Jennifer Song and Cyna Rodriguez — all finished tied for 16th at 15-over.

This is the fourth time in the last five years USC has won a regional title, and the 13th consecutive year the team has advanced to the NCAA Championships.

A torrid Arizona squad bested UCLA by nine strokes for the West crown, although the Bruins comfortably advanced thanks to another stellar effort from Stephanie Kono and a rejuvenated Glory Yang. Kono, a sophomore from Hawaii, tied for 10th at 7-over par, while Yang, who’s had an inconsistent junior season, finished tied for 12th at 8-over.

UCLA has now been to 10 straight NCAA Championships.

The Pepperdine women’s golf team struggled in the final round out at the East site but was never in any serious danger of failing to be one of the top eight qualifying squads thanks to a stellar effort over the first 36 holes.

Freshman Danielle Kang, a Thousand Oaks resident who graduated early from Westlake High School and joined the Waves for the spring, began the final round tied for the lead at 5-under par with stumbled with a 3-over 75 to settle for sixth place. Jessica Wallace was Pepperdine’s next highest finisher in a tie for 30th.
