Choi takes lead with blistering 63

Shin, Miyazato should pose strong competition for Sunday’s final round.

For the first two days of the Samsung World Championship, someone forgot to tell the 20 ladies in the field that the South Course at Torrey Pines was supposed to be tough — there were a combined 15 rounds in the 60s, and the scoring average was more than a full shot below par each day on a layout that hosted the U.S. Open for the men in 2008.

Almost all of the players in he field heeded the message in Saturday’s third round, as there were only three rounds in the 60s and the scoring average rose to just a half-stroke below par.

Na Yeon Choi was the glaring exception.

The 21-year-old Korean blistered the South with 10 birdies and only one bogey, notching a career-low 63 to reach a 15-under total and gain a two-stroke advantage on the field.

“I felt almost perfect with everything,” said Choi, who tied her previous personal best with a 65 at last week’s P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship.

Last year’s runner-up in the Rolex Rookie of the Year race, Choi will now look to notch her first career win against the likes of countrywoman Jiyai Shin, who posted a 4-under-par 68 and is in second at 13-under, and Japan’s Ai Miyazato, who is in third at 12-under.

That would be no small feat considering the Samsung is one of the most high-profile events on the LPGA Tour schedule and that Miyazato and Shin are arguably the two best female golfers on the planet right now. Shin is coming off a playoff win in Arkansas last week and leads both the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year races, while Miyazato has finished inside the top 10 at six straight events, including a win at the Evian Masters and a tie for third at the RICOH Women’s British Open.

Check back to Southland Golf tomorrow to follow the final round of the Samsung World Championship at Torrey Pines.
