Coronado resident Brian Smock couldn’t have picked a better time to record his best finish on the Nationwide Tour for 2009. Faced with tough conditions in the final round of the Miccosukee Championship in Miami, Fla., Smock shot an even-par 71 to register an 8-under-par total for the tournament, placing him in a tie for second — his best finish of 2009 and tied for his best finish ever on the Nationwide Tour. Most importantly, the $46,667 check vaulted him from 64th to 41st on the money list, meaning he has qualified for this week’s Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island in South Carolina. Smock has won $134,560 on the Nationwide Tour in 2009. The field for the season-ending event, which begins Thursday and runs through Sunday, is reserved for the top 60 players on the money list. Once that tournament is done, the top 25 players on the money list earn exempt playing privileges on the PGA Tour for 2010. Smock, whose start at the Nationwide Tour Championship will be the 100th of his career on the circuit, has never played in a PGA Tour event.
