Hicks, Curl shoot 65 to share lead

Following weather delay, play suspended due to darkness with many golfers still on course.

Justin Hicks and Jeff Curl each shot 6-under-par 65 Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Golf Classic at the Country Club at Soboba Springs.

Because of a midday weather delay, about half of the 144 players in the field were unable to finish their opening rounds.

Hicks, who stands 19th on the Nationwide Tour money list, made seven birdies against only one bogey. Curl, on the other hand, engineered a much more up-and-down effort that included nine birdies and three bogeys. This is Curl’s 10th Nationwide Tour start of 2010, with his best finish a tie for 14th at the Mylan Classic. He is 144th on the money list.

Of the six players tied for third place at 5-under par, four — J.J. Killeen, Chris Kirk, Gary Woodland and Trevor Murphy — have concluded 18 holes.

Southern Californians Peter Tomasulo (Long Beach), Steve Pate (Ventura) and Brett Lederer (Lakewood) are among 11 players tied for ninth at 4-under. San Diego’s Alex Aragon also is 4-under par through nine holes.

The Soboba Golf Classic, which debuted last year, is the only full-field Nationwide Tour event to feature a $1 million purse. It is one of the last events on the Tour schedule and should go a long way in determining which players finished inside the top 25 on the money list and earn PGA Tour cards for 2011.
