Lakeside, Calif. — Richard Johnson knew he would have his 2008 PGA Tour card regardless of what he shot during Sunday’s final round at the Nationwide Tour Championship.

Now he also knows he’ll enter the 2008 PGA Tour campaign as the head of the Nationwide class.

Johnson fired his second consecutive 4-under-par 67 to win the Tour Championship at Barona Creek Golf Club, posting a 20-under total and grabbing the No. 1 spot on the money list from Roland Thatcher in the process.

“I’ve had the card locked up for a while so I’ve been playing pretty much free golf for a couple months now. This is kind of icing on the cake,” he said.

Johnson’s other win of 2007 came at the Mark Christopher Charity Classic in Rancho Cucamonga last month.

“I love Southern California now,” he said, also referring to his imminent return to the area as part of the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing.

There were two golfers who managed to play their way inside the top 25 and automatically earn PGA Tour cards. One was Michael Letzig, who moved from 26th to 12th after closing with a 5-under par 66 in the final round to finish alone in second at 19-under.

The other was veteran Tom Scherrer, who moved from 27th to 20th on the money list by tying for third.

Skip Kendall and David McKenzie, who went into the Tour Championship at 22nd and 23rd on the money list, respectively, both concluded in a tie for 21st at 11-under. However, their finishes were not enough to keep them inside the top 25, as they both slid four spots to 26th and 27th.

The 56 players in the field compiled 1,030 birdies at Barona Creek, meaning the PGA Tour and Nationwide will donate $206,000 to the Red Cross Fire Relief Fund as part of the “Birdies for Relief” program. The idea was conceived to help those devastated by the October wildfires.
