Southern California PGA announces new Neighborhood Golf program

Inaugural event will be held at Alhambra Golf Course on Tuesday, July 15

From the SCPGAPublished: July, 2008

The SCPGA will embark on an aggressive Growth of the Game and public relations program called "Neighborhood Golf" with the inaugural event scheduled for Tuesday, July 15 at Alhambra Golf Course. This event is geared towards people of all ages, and will provide attendees with the opportunity to try out the latest golf equipment, receive free lessons from PGA professionals, win prizes, enjoy food and drinks, and most of all, have fun!

“Alhambra Golf Course is an ideal location to kick off this program,” says SCPGA CEO Tom Addis III. “It’s right in the middle of a vibrant community, surrounded by schools, parks, churches and recreation facilities. The golf course itself is also set up very nicely to host an event as big as Neighborhood Golf, and the entire staff there is very excited.”

The Neighborhood Golf program is designed to provide activities at no charge that will attract, and pull, everyone to the game of golf. It will literally take golf to the local neighborhoods with the new and exciting program the SCPGA is billing as a golf carnival!

The Southern California PGA is hoping to introduce golf to community members who have not played or experienced the game, as well as bring people back to the game who have left for some reason.

The SCPGA will set up the Neighborhood program in parks, school athletic fields, parking lots and at golf facilities, just to name a few. The "carnival" will be located near golf facilities in order to provide a bridge for the introduction or re-introduction to the game and to provide the actual experience at a facility by real participation. There will be a mix of PGA instruction, games and contests, refreshments and entertainment for everyone visiting the Neighborhood to ensure the game of golf is presented in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

Softball, soccer, football and basketball dot the landscape for our young to participate in. The Section wants to show the advantage of enjoying the game of golf and teach how convenient and easy learning the game actually is. In fact, one of the priorities is to develop an alliance with the other sports and do some cooperative programs through Neighborhood Golf.

The SCPGA is heavily involved in community-based programs, such as its Junior Golf tour, which is one of the largest in the United States with over 2,000 players. The Neighborhood Golf initiative will complement the other Growth of the Game initiatives the SCPGA champions, including Play Golf America.

“We are certainly excited to launch this new program,” says Addis. “We know a lot of people out there have an interest in golf, but for some reason are intimidated, whether it’s the cost, or the impression that golf is difficult to learn, or the time required. We want to show everyone in the community that golf can be fun, easy to learn and, most of all, affordable.”
