College of the Canyons sophomore Ryan Weltig won the 36-hole Oxnard City Championship last weekend, beating Santa Barbara High School senior Andrew Perez in a playoff. Both players carded 3-under par 141s.

The event was held July 18-19 at River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard.

Weltig — an All-State selection at Canyons and fifth-place finisher at this year's California Community College Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship — began the day four shots off the lead. But all it took was a consistent effort and a par on the playoff hole to earn him the victory.

Earlier in the year Perez, after qualifying for CIF with his team, won the Southern Section Toyota Individual Championships after a playoff with Pepperdine men's golf team member, Johnny MacArthur.

Jason Rosenkranz and Brandon Hagy tied for second at 142, while Brad Uptgraft was third at 1-under-par 143.

Luis Hernandez won the A Flight after carding a 153. In B Flight, Kurt Keller needed a playoff to win over Tom Seidl. Both tied for first at 162. C Flight winner Darryl Gordon took Tom Tone to a playoff after they tied at 163. D Flight champion Brien Fitzgerald (174) won by five shots over George Linker (179).

Senior Championship winner Steven Loeb bested Jack Rector by three shots for the victory. Loeb and Rector shot 150 and 153, respectively. Joe Blatchford (145) won the senior A flight by three shots over Gary Nobiensky (148). Steve Mason sailed to a 15-shot victory over Joseph Ortega in the senior B flight. Mason finished at 8-under-par 136, while Ortega came in at 151. Fred Nunes (141) edged out Dave Richey (142) to win the senior C flight.

Rounding out the event was Candace Robledo, who won the Ladies Championship with a score of 158 Gross/131 Net.
