Andrew Perez defeated Aaron West on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the Oxnard City Golf Championship over the weekend at River Ridge Golf Club. Perez, an Oxnard resident who lost to Ryan Weitig in a playoff at this event a year ago, made bogey on the second playoff hole — the par-4 first on River Ridge’s Victoria Lakes course — to better West, who made double bogey. West caught a bad break when his tee shot settled against the lip of a fairway bunker. Both players made birdie on the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th. West, a Woodland Hills resident who won last month’s Ventura City Championship, led after the first round in Oxnard and was on his way to victory until a triple-bogey on the par-3 15th hole. Perez shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round and that proved to be good enough to tie West at 1-over for the 36-hole event through regulation. Notable winners from other flights: • Katie Rice, a freshman at Oxnard High School, shot a 150 total to win the women’s championship by one stroke. • Steve Lass, the UC-Santa Barbara men’s golf coach, registered a 145 total to win the senior division by four shots.
