![]() (photo: Mark Susson) The highlight of last year’s tournament had to be the Cinderella story coming true for fan favorite Bill Murray. He and his partner, D.A. Points, performed wonderfully and captured the team title. Murray has long been known for his antics on the course, but underneath that Carl Spackler-like exterior there’s a pretty good golfer. The story couldn’t have set up any better as Points recorded his first career PGA Tour victory as Murray’s teammate by closing with a 5-under-par 67 to add to his overall score of 15 under par – a two-shot victory. “To win at Pebble Beach … and with Bill Murray? My gosh, I don’t think I could ever have dreamed it up that well,” Points said. Points was two shots back after the 13th hole but knocked in an eagle from 110 yards out on the tricky par-5 14th for a one-shot lead, which he wouldn’t relinquish. The second stop in California for the PGA Tour is the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. One of the most unique and beautiful courses around – especially with a bunker in the middle of its 6th green - Riviera has hosted the Northern Trust Open since 1973. Last February Aaron Baddeley came up big at the Northern Trust Open by beating Vijay Singh by two shots. It’s hard to believe, but that was Baddeley’s first victory on tour in nearly four years – the third victory of his career. Baddeley now will defend his title against the regular, prestigious field of players that graces the Northern Trust Open. The tournament debuted in 1926 and moved to various locations in Los Angeles before settling in at Riviera Country Club. Other than the major championships, the Northern Trust Open is the fourth-oldest event on the PGA Tour. Last year the tournament brought in $1.6 million for Los Angeles charities, which brought the total charitable contribution to $53.5 million since the event began. After February the PGA Tour will move on to the Florida swing with the Honda Classic at PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where defending champion Rory Sabbatini will defend his title.
