Former Diamond Bar resident Kevin Na tied for second place at the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Fla., on Monday, two strokes behind winner Ernie Els. The tournament was pushed to a Monday finish after heavy rain forced the suspension of play Sunday afternoon. Na resumed his final round with four holes remaining standing just two strokes behind Els. The 26-year-old Na applied some pressure when he birdied the par-5 16th hole to move within one shot of the lead. After settling for par on the 17th, Na hit his drive into the rough on the par-4 18th and had to lay up. Na missed his par putt by just inches and finished with a final-round 69 and a 9-under-par total. “I hit a great shot, and the putt, there was no doubt in my mind I was going to make that putt because it was a right-to-left putt, the way I like it,” said Na. “I just can't believe I didn’t — that was a shocker it came up short.” That shock led Na to toss his ball into the lake from what seemed like sheer disappointment. He’s now had three runner-up finishes in his PGA Tour career. “I’m going to break that door down one of these weeks,” he said. “I’ve got metal, going to leave a mark, too.” Other Southern Californians who also participated in the Arnold Palmer Invitational: Hunter Mahan, an Orange native, closed with a final-round 70 to tie for 25th. That effort included seven birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. Phil Mickelson, a native of San Diego, had a surprise finish, tying for 30th. The surprise came only because earlier in the week while practicing for the Invitational he shot 14-under-par 58 at Plantation Golf Club in Indio. |
