LA QUINTA, Calif.—Saturday’s third round marked a return to normalcy at the PGA Tour’s Bob Hope Classic. Clouds and rain gave way to sunshine and gentle breezes at all four tournament courses. Amateurs and celebrities returned after being absent from early-round action for the first time in event history during Friday’s second round. And there was more a feeling of golf in a dome — a common image used to describe a benign setting ideal for lots of birdies. Plenty of golfers took advantage, including Tour rookie Alex Prugh, who shot a “boring” 7-under-par 65 at La Quinta Country Club to take the lead at 21-under par. Second-round leader Bubba Watson (68 on Palmer Private course at PGA West) and Martin Flores (65 at SilverRock Resort) are tied for second at 20-under. Flores, a rookie like Prugh, has yet to drop a shot through 54 holes. If the weather stays pleasant, the tournament figures to be a shootout for the final 36 holes. Tomorrow, pros play with amateurs for the final time, and Monday the tournament’s fifth and final round will feature the low 70 professionals and ties. Here’s how notable Southern Californians fared in the third round of the Bob Hope Classic: • Kevin Na is in the best position of any Southern California player. The former Diamond Bar resident is tied for ninth at 14-under par after posting a 5-under 67 in the third round at SilverRock. Na’s putter once again served him nicely, as he took just 27 putts after needing 27 in the second round and 25 in the first round. • Although the final round of the 90-hole event won’t be until Monday, Saturday still served as moving day for Long Beach native John Merrick. The 27-year-old, playing on the Palmer course at PGA West, fired a bogey-free 66 that vaulted him 18 spots into a tie for 21st at 12-under par. That mark is still well behind Prugh’s 21-under total, but Merrick has proven he can go low in the last two rounds of the Hope — he closed with 63-67 last year en route to his runner-up finish. • Any momentum Murrieta’s Rickie Fowler developed with his 2-under-par 70 at La Quinta Country Club in the second round was nullified with a 3-over-par 75 in the third round at PGA West’s Nicklaus Private course. He is tied for 118th at 3-over par and will need a minor miracle to make the cut for Monday’s final round. “Terrible,” Fowler said of his play Saturday. “My swing doesn’t feel very good. I’m going to work on fundamentals and get it straightened out.” The 21-year-old came into 2010 as a favorite for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year after nearly winning last year’s Frys.com Open in the Fall Series, but has struggled to find consistency early on. “[My swing] hasn’t felt good yet. It felt really good right before I went to Hawaii, and I guess I lost it on the plane flight over there,” said Fowler. • A change of scenery did Paul Goydos well in the third round. After posting solid yet unspectacular 69s in his first two rounds at the PGA West tracks, the Long Beach native switched to SilverRock and posted a bogey-free 67 to move into a tie for 25th at 11-under par. That effort included only one missed fairway and 27 putts. • What started as a roller-coaster ride for Scott McCarron at La Quinta Country Club Saturday transitioned into a joyous stroll. The La Quinta resident began on the back 9 with three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey in his first six holes, eventually settling for a 1-under 35 on that side. On the front 9, McCarron recorded four birdies and no dropped shots, leading to a 67 that has him in 25th at 11 under. • Rancho Santa Fe’s Jamie Lovemark put himself in position to make the cut, shooting a 6-under-par 66 on the Palmer Private course to vault into a tie for 56th at 8-under par. • Locals who need to go low Sunday in order to stick around for Monday: 2007 Hope champion and Poway native Charley Hoffman (T78, 5-under par), Torrance native Chris Tidland (T93, 3-under par), Escondido native John Mallinger (T115, 2-over par) and San Diego State alumnus Scott Piercy (T118, 3-over par).
