As expected, Phil Mickelson will make his 2010 debut in the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. The 72-hole event is scheduled to begin Thursday, January 28 and conclude Sunday, January 31. Mickelson, a San Diego native and three-time major champion, heads into this season having won two out of his last three events in 2009 — the Tour Championship and the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions. Nine of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are in the field at Farmers (formerly known as the Buick Invitational), including No. 15 Robert Allenby, No. 19 Ernie Els and No. 21 Lucas Glover, the reigning U.S. Open champion. Glover is the only 2009 major winner who will be teeing it up on the North and South courses at Torrey Pines. Neither defending Masters champion Angel Cabrera nor ’09 British Open winner Stewart Cink played the Buick Invitational last year, but current PGA Championship titleholder Y.E. Yang was an entrant in both 2008 and 2009. Other 2009 participants who will be skipping the PGA Tour stop in 2010 are Padraig Harrington (sixth in the world), Retief Goosen (17), Camilo Villegas (25) and Rory Sabbatini (44). On the other hand, 18 of the top 50 players in the world have committed to play in the European Tour’s Qatar Masters, the second of three consecutive events held in the Middle East (the schedule of those tournaments directly corresponds with the trio of PGA Tour events held in Southern California). Three of the top 10 golfers in the world are in that field — Lee Westwood (4), Henrik Stenson (7) and Paul Casey (8) — as well as American Kenny Perry and notable Europeans Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter. Goosen and Villegas have entered as well. At this week’s PGA Tour event, the Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, the highest-ranked player is Mike Weir (37). Several players with a higher ranking are competing in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, including L.A. native Anthony Kim (24), who played his high school golf in La Quinta.
