Rain was the story during Friday’s second round of the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, but Dustin Johnson and Steve Stricker still made news with solid play at the PGA Tour’s annual stop in Pacific Palisades. Stricker, who is No. 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings, followed an opening 67 with a 6-under-par 65 to grab the clubhouse lead at 10-under, while first-round leader Johnson made a hole-in-one on the par-3 sixth en route to a 3-under par total through 16 holes to tie Stricker at the top. It rained all day, never stopped,” said Johnson, who will defend his title at next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. “But it drifted from light to raining pretty good. It was pretty chilly out there, cold and wet. “On a day like today you've just got to stay patient and don't get frustrated with the weather.” Andres Romero is alone in third place at 7-under par and has three holes remaining on his round. USC alumnus Kevin Stadler, who celebrated his 30th birthday Friday, shot an even-par 71 and is in a three-way tie for fourth place at 6-under with Tim Wilkinson and Justin Rose. Forty-one players will tee off tomorrow morning to finish the second round. Anthony Kim and Phil Mickelson, Southern Californians who had up-and-down first rounds, each rebounded with 5-under-par 66s. Kim, a Los Angeles native, is in a four-way tie for seventh at 5-under, while San Diego’s Mickelson, aiming for an unprecedented third win in a row at the Northern Trust, is in a logjam for 11th place at 4-under.
