When the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School wrapped up on November 17, some of the Southland’s most recognizable names found themselves in position to regain their tour cards. Among those who advanced to the final stage at Beaumont’s Oak Valley Golf Club were Lynwood native Bob May, who finished tied for second with a strong 18-under-par total. Tying for 14th place were San Diego native Chris Riley and Ventura’s Steve Pate. While Pate and Riley are former Ryder Cup participants, May is best known for losing to Tiger Woods in a dramatic playoff at the 2000 PGA Championship. Another notable Southland golfer who reached the final stage is Los Angeles native Duffy Waldorf. A three-time PGA Tour winner, Waldorf shot a 65 in the final round at the TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Tex. to vault inside the top 20 and move on. Here are more results from the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School: • Others advancing out of Oak Valley include Idyllwild’s Brendan Steele and former San Diego State golfer Scott Piercy. • Todd Demsey, a former standout at Torrey Pines High School, finished tied for fourth at the Royal Dunes Golf Club (Maricopa, Ariz.) second stage qualifying site. Northridge’s Darren Angel also qualified. • After an inspirational run to the second stage, 56-year-old Mac O’Grady, a Palm Springs resident who has won twice on the PGA Tour, withdrew after three tough rounds at The Woodlands (Kingwood, Tex.). • Long Beach native Peter Tomasulo finished fourth at TPC Craig Ranch to advance. The final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School will be held from Wednesday, November 28 to Monday, December 3 at Orange County National in Orlando, Fla.
