Former “Big Break Mesquite” contestant James Nitties maintained his spot atop the final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School after Friday’s third round, shooting a 3-under-par 69 on the Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta. The Aussie now has company. Glen Day, who blistered the Stadium layout with eight birdies and no bogeys for a 64, has a share of the lead at 15-under. Geoffrey Sisk is alone in third place at 13-under par. Seven golfers are tied for fourth at 12-under, including two golfers with Southern California ties. Troy Kelly (La Quinta) birdied the 18th hole to post 70, and James Oh (Los Angeles) backed up a 63 in the second round with a 70 Friday to put himself in solid position with 54 holes remaining. With only 16 of 163 golfers in the field over par for the week, low scores have been the norm on both tracks at PGA West. At the halfway point of the final stage, the qualifying score for PGA Tour cards is 10-under par — the last time the event was held at PGA West in 2006, a cumulative total of 8-under par marked the cut line. However, the top 30 players and ties earned full-time Tour status that year, and in 2007, the number of qualifiers was lowered to the top 25 and ties.
