While Southern Californians Kevin Stadler and Anthony Kim remained in contention through two rounds of the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open, Phil Mickelson did not. After positioning himself in the top 10 with a 3-under-par 69 Thursday, the 39-year-old San Diegan imploded with a 4-over 76 Friday at Redstone Golf Club’s Tournament Course in Humble, Tex., to spiral down to a tie for 58th at 1-over par. A triple-bogey 7 on the par-4 10th hole was compounded by yet another poor performance on the greens. After taking 30 putts in round 1, Mickelson had 31 in round 2. “What was frustrating was not making the 12-footer there or not making the 20-footer the next hole, not making the 10-footer the next hole or three-putting from 12 feet on the following hole,” Mickelson said of his round. “That kind of wore on me.” On the other hand, Stadler and Kim fired their second-consecutive under-par rounds to stay close to Bryce Molder and his leading pace of 9-under par. Former USC men’s golfer Stadler, who shared the lead with Cameron Percy after the first round, followed a 5-under 67 with a 2-under 70 and is tied for fourth at 7-under. Kim, a Los Angeles native, is at that number as well after a 3-under 69. “I’m playing very well. Really hit some squirrelly shots and got away with it,” he said.
