Kim heads into final round tied for lead at Shell Houston Open

Los Angeles native hasn't won in last 35 PGA Tour starts.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: April, 2010

Anthony Kim has a golden opportunity to win for the first time in his last 35 PGA Tour starts.

The Los Angeles native heads into the final round of the Shell Houston Open tied for the lead with Bryce Molder at 10-under par. Kim began the day tied for fourth at 7-under and shot a 3-under 69 in Saturday’s third round.

It’s been some time since 2008, when the youngster was anointed as one of the world's best young talents after registering his first two career victories.

There have been close calls since then, but Kim, still widely renowned as a phenomenal natural talent, has yet to garner win No. 3.

He opened his post-round interview by candidly saying, “It’s been a long time since I’ve been in this position.”

Never confused as an accurate driver, Kim hasn’t taken the straightest path to the top of the leaderboard. After hitting only 15 of 29 fairways through the first two rounds, he found a dismal three of 14 today.

Still, even after putting himself in a variety of precarious situations on the back nine thanks to wayward drives, Kim made four birdies, including a kick-in putt on the par-4 12th after carving a lob wedge over a bush from a muddy lie.

“Maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed — just spraying the ball off the tee and just hitting the worst shots I've hit probably this year,” he said. “But I hung in there, I stayed patient, and that's the name of the game.”

Vaughn Taylor and Joe Ogilvie are tied for third at 8-under par.

After beginning the third round tied with Kim at 7-under par, former USC men’s golf team member Kevin Stadler stumbled to a share of 15th after posting a 2-over 74.

San Diegan Phil Mickelson followed up a disappoint 76 Friday with a 2-under 70 Saturday to rise into a tie for 37th. This will mark the first time since 2003 that the world’s No. 3 golfer has yet to amass at least one PGA Tour victory prior to the Masters.
