Perez shoots 66, one off lead

Fowler falters in first round of PGA Tour’s Sony Open.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: January, 2010

After re-acclimating himself to PGA Tour competition at the winners-only SBS Championship last week, Pat Perez seemed comfortable in the first round of the full-field Sony Open at Hawaii’s Waialae Country Club.

The former San Diego resident had five birdies and one bogey en route to a 4-under-par 66 Thursday at Waialae Country Club in Hawaii, positioning himself one stroke off the lead held by Ryan Palmer, David Love III, reigning Qualifying School medalist Troy Merritt and defending Sony champion Zach Johnson. Perez finished tied for 10th in the SBS last week, registering four sub-par rounds in the process.

Murrieta native Rickie Fowler failed to find a comfort zone in his first start as a full-time member of the PGA Tour. The 21-year-old, who has been heralded as one of the sport’s brightest young stars after a string of stellar performances last season, finds himself at the bottom of the leaderboard after a 5-over 75 that included four bogeys and two double bogeys.

Here’s how other Southern Californians are faring at the Sony Open through one round:

• Torrance native Chris Tidland, who returns to the PGA Tour this season after finishing inside the top 25 on the 2009 Nationwide Tour money list, posted a 1-under 69.

• Playing in his first career Tour event, Encinitas native and former San Diego State men’s golf team member Aaron Goldberg struggled on the greens with 32 putts but still mustered an even-par 70. Goldberg gained entry into the field by winning the Monday qualifier with a 63 on the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay.

• Fifty-year-old Corey Pavin shot a 1-over 71. The Ventura native and former standout on the UCLA men’s golf team will captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team later this year.

• Former Diamond Bar resident Kevin Na shot a disappointing 3-over-par 73. Na has excelled at Waialae in each of the last two years, finishing in ties for fourth and fifth in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
