Two of the stops in the Southland on the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing will have new monikers in 2010 because of sponsorship pullouts. The Bob Hope Classic, a 90-hole tournament in the Palm Springs area, has officially removed Chrysler from its name. The tournament, originally called the Palm Springs Golf Classic, added Hope’s name and long-nosed logo in 1965. Chrysler came aboard in 1985 and had been affiliated with the tournament since that time. The 2010 event — which includes a celebrity field — is set for January 18-24 at La Quinta Country Club, SilverRock Resort, the Nicklaus Private Course at PGA West and the Palmer Private Course at PGA West. A week after the Hope, the tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego will be known as The Century Club of San Diego Invitational. The Century Club, which was founded in 1961, has organized and managed the PGA Tour stop since it was known as the San Diego Open. The group entered into a working partnership with celebrity host Andy Williams in 1967, and the tournament was renamed the Andy Williams San Diego Open the following year. After signing sponsorship deals with Wickes, American Isuzu Motors and Shearson Lehman Brothers, The Century Club entered in an agreement with Buick Motor Division in 1991, and the event was known as the Buick Invitational through last year. One of the best things going for the annual event at Torrey Pines, which will be held January 25-31, is that Tiger Woods loves the course and typically plays well there. The Cypress native has won seven titles at Torrey Pines since 1999, including winning the 2008 U.S. Open in a Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate.
