Five junior golfers from the Los Angeles area have been selected to represent the United States at the fifth biennial PING Junior Solheim Cup, the American Junior Golf Association announced. Ani Gulugian of Irvine, Alison Lee of Valencia, Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Kristen Park of Buena Park, and Jane Rah of Torrance will compete for the U.S. at Aurora Country Club in Aurora, Ill., from Aug. 17-19. The only girls’ team event of its kind at the junior level, the PING Junior Solheim Cup is a PING tournament managed by the AJGA and is patterned after The Solheim Cup. This prestigious international junior golf invitational will pit the 12 finest female junior golfers (ages 12-18) from the United States against the top 12 junior girls from Europe. The 12 players on the U.S. Team were selected based on a combination of the AJGA’s Polo Golf Rankings and the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Girls Rankings as of July 20. Nancy Lopez, a 1987 LPGA Hall of Fame inductee and member of the inaugural 1990 Solheim Cup, will serve as captain. Gulugian, 17, is ranked No. 9 in the Polo rankings. She has three career wins, two of which came in 2008. Her junior golf resume includes a third-place finish at the 2009 Rolex Tournament of Champions and a seventh-place finish at the 2009 Rolex Girls Junior Championship, as well as an appearance at this year's U.S. Women's Open. Lee, 14, is ranked No. 12 in the Polo rankings. Lee was named first-team Rolex Junior All-American in 2008 and won the Hanmi Bank Junior Open that same year. Lua, 18, will return to the PING Junior Solheim Cup after competing for the U.S. at Bastad Golf Club in Bastad, Sweden, in 2007. She is a four-time Rolex Junior All-American and has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the UCLA women's golf team. Her junior golf career includes two victories and 14 top-five finishes in AJGA play. Park, 16, is a three-time Rolex Junior All-American with four national junior golf victories to her name. Most notably, the 16-year-old won the 2007 U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur and the 2008 Joanne Winter Silver Belle. Rah, 18, has amassed a 3-2-1 record during her previous two PING Junior Solheim Cups (2005, 2007). A four-time Rolex Junior All-American, Rah has seven victories in national junior golf competition, including the 2009 Scott Robertson Memorial. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at Oklahoma State University. These five Southern Californians will be joined by seven players from four other states. The 2009 team has a combined 28 AJGA wins and has an average ranking of 10 in the July 21 Polo Golf Rankings. For more information on the PING Junior Solheim Cup, click here. |
