Perez tears two ligaments in ankle

Torrey Pines High School graduate could miss two months.

With a win at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and neatly $1.5 million in earnings in 12 events, 2009 has been Pat Perez’s best career campaign on the PGA Tour.

It has come to an abrupt halt because of injury.

According to a blog post on his website, PatPerezGolf.com, Perez tore two of the three ligaments in his ankle while running with his dog last week. The Torrey Pines High School graduate could be sidelined for at least two months.

Wrote Perez, “I went for a run last Friday with Duke, my German Shepherd. He went one way, I went another and somehow missed the curb and wrecked my ankle. Once we hobbled back to the house, I headed to the doc, got an MRI and learned that I tore up two of the three ligaments that go over the ankle.”

It’s likely the 33-year-old will miss qualifying for both the U.S. Open and British Open, to be held in June and July, respectively.

Regarded as one of the most emotionally blunt members of the PGA Tour, Perez has accepted his predicament but isn’t necessarily looking forward to the healing process.

“The docs are really pushing me to lay low and take some time off, which is asking a lot for a guy like me. I don’t do too well with ‘down time.’ I’m always on the go, I love being on the road and my life is playing tournaments week in and week out.

“I have to suck it up and actively rest for a few weeks. I’m in a foot cast that’s literally up to my knee and that’ll be the case for several weeks.”

Perez recorded his first win in 198 career starts at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in January. Less than two months later, he finished tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He currently stands 14th on the FedEx Cup points list.
