Cantlay, a senior on the verge of wrapping up his tenure at Anaheim’s Servite High School, shot a 4-under-par 68 to tie Santa Barbara High School golfers Jack Perry and Shane Lebow for medalist honors. Then, on the second playoff hole — the par-4 18th — Cantlay made a birdie to seize the title. Perry and Lebow's scores propelled Santa Barbara to the team title with a 2-under total of 358, a record low for the CIF competition. Servite finished second at 3-over-par 363, while Torrey Pines High School — led by 2009 U.S. Junioe Amateur runner-up Jay Hwang — was third. Cantlay has had a busy run of high-profile tournament golf recently. Over Memorial Day weekend at the end of May, he finished tied for third with an 8-under-par total at the American Junior Golf Association’s prestigious Thunderbird International in Scottsdale, Ariz. Last Thursday, the Los Alamitos resident posted a 4-under 68 at the CIF Southern California High School Championship to tie for 14th and help Servite reach the state finals. The whirlwind continued this Monday at U.S. Open sectional qualifying, held at Sacramento’s Del Paso Country Club. After finding himself in contention for one of four U.S. Open berths following a 2-under 69 on his first 18 holes, he stumbled back to the pack with a 2-over 73. Still, his tie for 28th there bettered such players as tour professional and Los Angeles native David Berganio Jr. and was only one stroke behind PGA Tour veteran Charlie Wi of North Hills. Cantlay, ranked as the No. 2 junior in the country according to Golfweek, will be a member of the UCLA men’s golf team this fall. His last day of exams at Servite is this Friday.
