Orange County’s Cantlay moves on to semifinals at U.S. Amateur

Incoming UCLA freshman outlasts Dierksen in 20 holes; Valencia’s Homa falls to defending champion An.

Patrick Cantlay is a semifinalist at the 2010 U.S. Amateur.

The former standout at Servite High School in Anaheim and incoming freshman on the UCLA men’s golf team needed 20 holes to defeat Jed Dierksen in the quarterfinal match-play round Friday at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.

Cantlay was 2-up on Dierksen after nine holes but lost both the 10th and 11th holes to retreat to all square. Cantlay made bogey on the 14th hole to fall 1-down, an edge Dierksen maintained until the par-5 18th hole.

However, Dierksen three-putted the finishing hole for bogey and Cantlay made par to square the match and send it to extra holes. After both players made par on the par-4 first hole (the 19th of the match), Cantlay posted a par on the 20th hole to better Dierksen’s bogey and win the match

“I’m very excited and very happy to be here,” said Cantlay, who won the CIF State High School Boys Championship in June. “The key today was not getting down on myself. It's very important to stick to my game plan and just do my routine and accept the shot that I hit.”

Cantlay, who has worked with Virginia Country Club PGA professional Jamie Mulligan since he was nine years old, will face Oklahoma State University junior Peter Uihlein in the semifinals Saturday. Uihlein defeated Cowboys teammate Morgan Hoffmann by a 1-up margin in the quarterfinals.

Cantlay came into the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur as the No. 2 seed after shooting rounds of 70-67 to finish one stroke behind medalist Jeff Wilson. In the first round of match play Wednesday, Cantlay defeated former USC men’s golf team member and Los Angeles resident Brad Shaw 2-and-1.

In back-to-back frames Thursday, Cantlay defeated Blayne Barber 3-and-2, then topped Connor Arendell 1-up in the round of 16.

The other Southern Californian to reach the quarterfinals was Max Homa. The Valencia resident, a sophomore on the men’s golf team at University of California-Berkeley, lost to defending U.S. Amateur champion Ben An 1-up. An, who will join Homa as a teammate on the Bears squad this fall, never trailed in the match.
