Orange County's Cantlay falls in semifinals at U.S. Amateur

Eventual champion Uihlein defeats incoming UCLA freshman 4-and-3.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: August, 2010

Patrick Cantlay was eliminated in the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur on Saturday, August 28 at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.

The former standout at Servite High School in Anaheim and incoming freshman on the UCLA men's golf team lost by a 4-and-3 margin to Peter Uihlein, who grabbed a 1-up lead on the first hole and never trailed.

Uihlein went on to defeat David Chung 4-and-2 in the 36-hole final Sunday. Uihlein, who turned 21 on the day he defeated Chung, is a junior on the Oklahoma State University men's golf team and son of Acushnet Golf chairman and CEO Wally Uihlein.

Cantlay, who has worked with Virginia Country Club PGA professional Jamie Mulligan since he was nine years old, needed 20 holes to defeat Jed Dierksen in the quarterfinal match-play round Friday.

Cantlay came into the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur as the No. 2 seed after shooting rounds of 70-67 to finish one stroke behind medalist Jeff Wilson. In the first round of match play Wednesday, Cantlay defeated former USC men’s golf team member and Los Angeles resident Brad Shaw 2-and-1.

In back-to-back frames Thursday, Cantlay defeated Blayne Barber 3-and-2, then topped Connor Arendell 1-up in the round of 16.
