"Today was a nuclear bomb. I don't know where it came from. If I knew that, I wouldn't be able to touch it," he said. "That's why you play. These are the things that I think are kind of cool." Teeing off on the par-4 first hole, the 46-year-old Goydos made four birdies and no bogeys on his outward half for a score of 31 on the opening nine. He duplicated his birdie output on the second nine, though, notching eight of them. The only hole he failed to birdie was the par-4 15th hole. Goydos posted a 12-under score on the par-71 course, good for a five-shot lead over Michael Letzig and Matt Jones early in the 72-hole event. For the round, Goydos missed only one fairway and hit all but two greens in regulation. The other three players in Tour history to shoot 59 are Al Geiberger (1977 Memphis Classic), Chip Beck (1991 Las Vegas Invitational) and most recently David Duval in the final round of the 1999 Bob Hope Classic. Beck is the only one of those players that didn't win the event in which he recorded a 59. Visit PGATour.com for an up-to-the-minute leaderboard.
