Long Beach native Paul Goydos took advantage of ideal scoring conditions in his first round at the Valero Texas Open Thursday, shooting a seven-under-par 63 to grab the early lead at the PGA Tour event. The 44-year-old Goydos had eight birdies in his first 13 holes, six of which came on the front nine for an outward half of 29 at La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio. “Everything kind of went my way today,” said the two-time Tour winner, who needed only 24 putts. “San Antonio and I agree. We seem to get along pretty well.” A bogey on the par-4 18th dropped him to seven-under, one shot ahead of Jeff Maggert and Australian Marc Leishman. Goydos endured a difficult start to his 2009 season with the death of his ex-wife. “It is what it is, and we’re all going to go through difficult times,” said the former Long Beach State standout. “It’s just something you have to deal with in life, and it’s part of the growing and maturing process.” He has struggled to find consistent form, missing the cut in seven of 11 events so far this year. Other Southland natives who have gotten off to solid starts at the Texas Open include Oxnard’s Corey Pavin (66) and Escondido’s John Mallinger (67), who is coming off a tie for third place at The Players Championship last week.
