Goydos holds three-shot lead heading to weekend

Mallinger climbs into contention with six-under 64.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: May, 2009

Paul Goydos held the lead by himself for much of the first round at the Valero Texas Open, but by the end of the day three-time tournament champion Justin Leonard joined him at the top.

On Friday, Goydos ensured he’d have first place all to himself heading to the weekend.

The Long Beach native kept his foot on the gas in the second round at La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio, shooting a five-under-par 65 that included three birdies on each side. Goydos’ 12-under-par total is three shots lower than a quintet of players — including Leonard and John Mallinger, an Escondido native who now resides in Long Beach.

A hot putter again served Goydos well. Needing only 24 putts during Thursday’s round of 63, the two-time PGA Tour winner required 25 Friday.

“When you’re … on pace to break 100 putts, you better play well and that’s the situation,” he said.

The last time Goydos was in contention was the 2008 Players Championship, where he lost in a playoff to Sergio Garcia after finding the water on the notorious “Island Green” 17th hole.

“This is why you play,” Goydos said. “If I wasn't comfortable where I am right now, I need to find another profession. This is why we play, practice and endure rough weeks, so we learn something, to improve and get better.

“Tomorrow is going to be another chapter in that learning process of becoming a better player.”
