A sloppy final round ruined any chance Long Beach native Paul Goydos had of winning The Barclays last week, but it didn’t completely tarnish his performance at the first PGA Tour FedEx Cup event of the season at Liberty National in Jersey City, N.J. Goydos, who began Sunday’s final round in a tie for the lead with Steve Marino, shot a 4-over-par 75 to finish tied for ninth at 5-under par. A double bogey on the par-4 third quickly knocked Goydos out of the lead, and three more bogeys and just one birdie for the remainder of the day ensured he wouldn’t catch eventual champion Heath Slocum. Despite the closing struggle, Goydos moved from 49th in the FedEx Cup standings to 33rd. He is assured of playing in this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship, and is all but guaranteed a spot in the BMW Championship the week after, an event reserved for the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup following the Deutsche Bank. The top 30 players at the end of the BMW qualify for the Tour Championship. Goydos would likely need a strong finish in at least one of the next two events to reach the last of four FedEx Cup tournaments. Other Southern California competitors in the FedEx Cup: • San Diego natives Chris Riley and Bill Lunde both were eliminated from the FedEx Cup at the end of The Barclays. Lunde, who began the tournament in 109th place, finished tied for 64th at Liberty National and only moved two spots up the standings into 107th, outside the top 100. Riley, on the other hand, narrowly missed the top 100 — he began the week in 119th place and finished tie for 46th to move to 103rd. • Right now, five Southern Californians are in the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings: Tiger Woods (1), Phil Mickelson (10), Hunter Mahan (15), Kevin Na (22) and Charley Hoffman (30).
