Goydos headed for British Open at Turnberry

Long Beach native qualifies for season’s third major thanks to second-place finish on special money list.

BY ELI MILLERPublished: July, 2009

PGA Tour veteran Paul Goydos has qualified for the 2009 British Open by virtue of finishing second on a special midseason money list.

The Long Beach native earned $772,427 at six events — The Players Championship, The Memorial, St. Jude Classic, U.S. Open, Travelers Championship and AT&T National. Most of his winnings came through a tie for fourth at the St. Jude and a tie for second at the Travelers.

For the year, Goydos has earned nearly $1.3 million and stands 38th on the FedEx Cup points list.

The former All-American at Long Beach State University played in his first career British Open last year at Royal Birkdale, missing the cut.

This year’s British Open will be played July 16-19 at Turnberry’s Alisa Championship Course. For more coverage of Southland competitors at the event, check back next week to Southland Golf.
