After opening with a 6-under-par 65 and ending tied for the lead after Thursday’s first round at The Barclays, Paul Goydos shot an even-par 71 Friday to back up to a share of second place Friday at Liberty National in Jersey City, N.J. Goydos is two shots behind Webb Simpson, who, at 8-under par, is the only golfer in the 124-player field to record a pair of rounds in the 60s. Wet and windy conditions made the par-71, 7,400-yard layout play even longer in the second round, and players at the first PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoff event of 2009 found it difficult to shoot low numbers — only four players posted scores below 70 Friday. Despite being one of the Tour’s shortest hitters, Goydos has remained in contention this week thanks to a hot putter. The 45-year-old needed just 23 putts Thursday and 28 more Friday, ranking tied for fifth in total putts. “I’ve had good speed on the greens. It’s funny how the putter is the great equalizer in this game,” Goydos said. A two-time winner on Tour, Goydos has enjoyed a solid 2009 campaign. The Long Beach native entered this week 49th on the FedEx Cup points list, in excellent position to remain inside the top 100 and advance to next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship. He struggled at the outset of the year, missing five of his first six cuts, but has turned it around, missing only three cuts in his last 13 events and notching five top-25 finishes in the process — including a tie for second at the Travelers Championship in June. Here's how other prominent Southern California competitors have fared so far at The Barclays: • San Diego’s Charley Hoffman, who opened with a 5-under-par 66, stumbled with a 3-over 74 in the second round and is tied for ninth at 2-under par. • It’s been a ho-hum couple of rounds for Tiger Woods (Cypress), who is No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings. He’s shot 70-72 and is in a 12-way tie for 17th place at even par, eight shots back of Simpson. • One player with a lot to gain is San Diego native Bill Lunde, who entered this week in 109th place in the FedEx Cup standings. The 33-year-old Tour rookie is tied for 29th, in position to move inside the top 100 and play next week. • Anthony Kim has been on a rollercoaster ride for 36 holes, recording four birdies in each of his first two rounds but also registering a total of seven bogeys, as well as a triple bogey on the par-3 11th hole Thursday and a double bogey on the par-5 13th hole Friday. • Phil Mickelson (Rancho Santa Fe), who said he jarred his elbow after hitting a shot from thick rough Thursday, shot a 4-over 75 Friday and is tied for 44th. • John Merrick (Long Beach), who opened in solid position with a 3-under-par 68 Thursday, ballooned to an 80 Friday and missed the cut by a stroke. • San Diego’s Pat Perez also shot 80 Friday and missed the cut.
