Mickelson will play at WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

World’s No. 2 player also announces intentions to play in PGA Championship and the Barclays.

San Diego’s Phil Mickelson has confirmed he will be in the field at next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational as well as the PGA Championship a week later and the Barclays, he announced on his website Tuesday.

Mickelson, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and the second-ranked golfer in the world, has not played since the U.S. Open in June in order to be with his wife, Amy, and mother, Mary, both of whom have recently undergone treatment for breast cancer.

Phil Mickelson announced on his website last week that Amy and Mary are both doing well. Phil made the announcement about his wife’s cancer in May and then announced his mother’s ordeal earlier this month.

The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is one of three World Golf Championships events played in the United States. The limited-field tournament at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio begins Thursday, August 6 and ends Sunday, August 9.

The PGA Championship, to be held August 13-16, is at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. The season's fourth major also was held at the course in 2002, when Rich Beem defeated Tiger Woods by a stroke.

The Barclays, which begins Thursday, August 27, is the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events. Currently, Mickelson stands fifth in the FedEx Cup standings, 443 points behind leader Steve Stricker.

Mickelson’s 2009 campaign, while sporadic because of his family matters, has seen its share of success. A rough beginning on the West Coast Swing was negated with a win at the Northern Trust Open in February, followed by a triumph at the WGC-Ca Championship three weeks later.

Mickelson was in contention to win the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black last month but ended tied for second. He has earned more than $3.8 million this season.
