Plane crashes on Southern California golf course

Investigators still seeking cause of crash.

By Denise DeChainePublished: July, 2010

Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, golfers noticed a small plane on the course at Penmar Golf Course in Venice.

Student pilot Robert R. Davenport of Los Angeles was reportedly practicing touch-and-go landings out of Santa Monica Airport when the single-engine Cessna 152 crashed.

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after the crash but soon after arrival pronounced Davenport dead at the scene.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says Davenport was the only person on board the plane, which slammed into some trees near the eighth hole.

Investigators still seeking cause of the crash.
