(PHOTO:Southern California PGA) Launched in 2004 by The PGA of America, PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and the USGA, Play Golf America is a campaign that encourages people to play, to improve and to partake more often. “We’re lucky in Southern California,” said Nikki Gatch, assistant executive director and foundation director for the Southern California PGA, “in that we can play year-round and that we have so many facilities.” Yet Southland golfers can be distracted by all of the other activities available to them. Events such as Play Golf America Days, Gatch said, offer a fun, free and family-oriented way to recapture their attention. Since 2006, the SCPGA’s Play Golf America Days have hosted more than 3,000 participants. This year’s play day is Sunday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry. Paul Devine is co-chairman of the SCPGA’s Play Golf America Committee and director of instruction at The Golf Academy at Pacific Palms. He also is hosting the April 19 event. “Play Golf America Days are a great way for people to check out the game without any fear,” Devine said, noting that the range or golf course can be intimidating for first-timers. To show people how fun golf can be, Devine has planned a number of games, contests and activities. More than 20 PGA professionals will be available to give pointers, and equipment manufacturers will have products on hand for people to try. Play Golf America was formed to address the plateau in the number of avid golfers in the United States and their diminishing rounds per year. Now the promotions, activities and advertising mustered by the campaign are being directed toward increasing interest during a nervous economy. In addition to monthly promotions through the spring and summer, Play Golf America offers year-round opportunities to fall in love with the sport. New for 2009 is a program called Get Golf Ready. Aimed at adults, the series of five introductory lessons in a small group setting features discussions of the rules, etiquette, history and values, as well as significant on-course learning opportunities. The program typically costs $99, although fees may vary depending on the facility. In a move to encourage families and youth to play the game, the PGA and U.S. Kids Golf partnered to launch the PGA Family Course Program in 2007. The program creates a “short course” experience within existing courses, making golf more fun and accessible to golfers of any age or ability. Among courses participating are Aliso Viejo Golf Club in Aliso Viejo; Champions Club at The Retreat and Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona; Carlsbad Golf Center in Carlsbad; The Santaluz Club in San Diego; and the SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta.
