On Sunday, April 18, Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert will host one of the campaign’s free consumer festivals, which includes mini-lessons, contests, giveaways and equipment demos while serving to raise awareness of other functions and programs scheduled for the remainder of 2010. “The biggest benefit that this program provides is exposure to the game of golf,” said Nikki Gatch, assistant executive director for the Southern California chapter of the PGA. The SCPGA promotes Play Golf America Day as a “family day” with the goal of encouraging mom, dad and the kids to pursue golf as a family activity. “Play Golf America certainly is for juniors, but it’s also for adults, for beginners, and for those who are returning to the game,” Gatch said. The SCPGA also anticipates parents realizing that golf can be a regular family activity, as “it’s healthy, you get exercise and have fun,” Gatch noted. The free instruction provided is one of the most valuable elements. “The lesson can be as simple as getting the ball into the air for the first time, and being excited about that,” Gatch said. “Our hope is that [golfers] recognize the value of taking instruction from a PGA professional for their experience and knowledge.” Now in its sixth year, the Play Golf America initiative promotes many individual programs, including PGA Free Lesson Month, American Express Women’s Golf Month and Family Golf Month. If you’ve thought about buying new clubs, April is Free Fitting and Trade-Up Month. Visit www.playgolfamerica.com to learn more and find activities at Southern California courses. |
