SAN FRANCISCO—For whatever reason, Tiger Woods usually hasn’t performed as well in team competitions like he has in majors and regular stroke-play events. But his performance at the Presidents Cup at Harding Park Golf Course was an obvious exception. Woods was a perfect 5-0-0 in the biennial team competition, gaining his fifth and final victory with a convincing 6-and-5 thumping of Y.E. Yang in a Sunday singles match. The match had been much heralded because it marked the first time Woods and Yang were paired together since the final round of the 2009 PGA Championship, where Yang became the first player ever to best Woods after he held at least a share of the 54-hole lead in a major. Instead, the lopsided match was a fitting climax of a week where the International team put up a fight but never displayed the same consistency as their American counterparts. The U.S. held a 12.5-9.5 lead heading into Sunday singles, and the Internationals never threatened to stifle the Americans en route to the 17.5 points they needed to clinch the Cup. In eight installments of the competition, the U.S. has now won six times, including a flawless 5-0-0 mark on American soil.
