Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim are among 10 who automatically qualified for the U.S. Presidents Cup squad when the PGA Championship concluded at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Woods (Cypress) and Mickelson (Rancho Santa Fe) comfortably qualified by finishing first and second in the standings, respectively. Kim (Los Angeles) finished ninth, less than 500 points higher than 11th-place finisher Lucas Glover. Points were determined by a player’s PGA Tour prize money — from the 2007 Wyndham Championship through the end of the 2008 Tour season, every dollar won counted as a point, and from the start of the 2009 season through the PGA, every dollar counted as two points. La Quinta resident Fred Couples, who is serving as the captain of the American team, will make his final two selections for the 12-man roster on Tuesday, September 8. Randall Mell of GolfChannel.com reported last week that Couples confirmed Orange native Hunter Mahan would be one of the two captain’s selections. “I’m going to pick Hunter even if he doesn’t make it [on points],” Couples told GolfChannel.com. “I guarantee that one.” Mahan posted a tie for 16th at the PGA Championship, his third top-20 standing at a major in 2009. The 27-year-old Mahan finished 13th in the U.S. Presidents Cup standings, behind Glover and 12th-place finisher Brian Gay. Mickelson is the only American to have played in every Presidents Cup, sporting a 12-13-8 career record in the biennial match-plau competition against an International team comprised of 12 players born outside Europe. Woods has played in the last five editions of the event, posting a 13-11-1 record. The 24-year-old Kim has never played in the Presidents Cup, though he demonstrated his mettle in a similar format last year when he posted a 2-1-1 record for the U.S. against Europe in the Ryder Cup — a record that included a decisive 5-and-4 victory against Sergio Garcia in the singles portion. Mahan participated in the 2007 Presidents Cup, going 2-3-0. Like Kim, he gained valuable experience at the 2008 Ryder Cup, compiling an undefeated 2-0-3 record. The United States has posted a 5-1-1 mark in the Presidents Cup, winning every time the matches have been held on American soil. This year marks the first time the competition will be held at an American venue other than Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia — the 2009 edition will take place from October 8-11 at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco.
