Southern California is well represented at the eighth Presidents Cup, which is being held Thursday through Sunday at San Francisco’s Harding Park Golf Course — the first time the biennial team competition is visiting the West Coast.

It starts with the leadership, as La Quinta resident Fred Couples is serving as captain of the event. He has expressed excitement for the role, and has raised plenty of eyebrows across the country by bringing on NBA legend Michael Jordan as an honorary assistant captain.

San Diego native Phil Mickelson has been a part of every U.S. Presidents Cup sqaud since the competition’s inception in 1994, compiling a 11-13-9 record. He comes into the event with positive spirits after winning the Tour Championship, the final event stop in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs.

Cypress native Tiger Woods, who won the FedEx Cup and its $10 million prize, returns to the U.S. team atmosphere after missing last year’s Ryder Cup following knee surgery. Woods, the world’s No. 1 player, is 13-11-1 in the event, including a stellar 7-2-1 record in the foursomes (alternate shot) format.

While the other two Southern Californian natives on the U.S. squad — Hunter Mahan and Anthony Kim — are less experienced than Woods and Mickelson, they are quickly becoming regulars on the U.S. team scene.

Mahan, who was born in Orange, went 2-3-0 in his first taste of Presidents Cup competition in 2007, but improved a year later as a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup squad, registering a 2-0-3 record.

A native of the Los Angeles area and a former standout at La Quinta High School, Kim is one of two Presidents Cup rookies for the U.S. But by no means is he a novice in playing for his country — he went 2-1-1 in last year’s Ryder Cup, a performance that included a convincing singles victory against European star Sergio Garcia.

The Presidents Cup pits a squad of 12 Americans against 12 international competitors (not from Europe) in a four-day match-play series.

The U.S. team has owned the Presidents Cup, losing only once, in 1998. The matches ended in a tie in 2005.
