Ho gains early edge and hangs on to win irvine City Amateur Championship

Six-under-par 65 in first round is enough to offset closing 76 and defeat Chu and Cota.

Raymond Ho won the Irvine City Amateur Championship last Sunday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club, besting runner-ups Thomas Chu and Chancellor Cota by three shots. Ho finished at 1-under-par 141 for the 36-hole event, while Chu and Cota carded 2-over-par 144s.

Ho’s 6-under-par 65 in Saturday’s first round was the best score in the field by five strokes. Although Ho shot 11 strokes higher on Sunday with a 76, he still won comfortably.

Alvin Cheung and Shane Mason tied for fourth at 145, while three players — Stephen Edman, Brian Hollenbeck and Kevin McKelvie — tied for sixth at 146.

Greg Creamer won the A flight with a 155 gross/145 net score. He was followed by David Goldinger (156/146) in second and Paul Bridges (159/149) in third.

B Flight winner Mark Tall shot 157 gross to win over Tim Gavin (158) by one stroke. But Gavin bested Tall on the net side, carding a 136 to Tall's 141.

Hung Huynh took home the victory from the C flight after shooting a 174 gross/144 net. Huynh bested runner-up Tim Gorman (175) by just one shot.
