As expected, Murrieta native Rickie Fowler has been named to the United States Walker Cup team, a biennial competition that pits a team of 10 American amateurs against a squad composed of amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland.
The 2009 matches will be held September 12 and 13 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
The 20-year-old Fowler competed in the 2007 Walker Cup at Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, just as he was beginning his collegiate career at Oklahoma State University. He won each of his foursomes matches and went 1-1 in singles competition.
Fowler, who garnered both player and freshman of the year honors at Oklahoma State in 2008, announced earlier this summer he would forego his final two years of college eligibility and turn pro following the Walker Cup. It was unofficial at the time if he would be on the U.S. squad, but a stellar amateur record and past success at the event made him a near lock.
In early August, Fowler nearly won the Nationwide Tour’s Children’s Hospital Invitational on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University, losing in a playoff to Derek Lamely.
Fowler has won an array of prominent amateur events, including a pair of Sunnehanna Amateur crowns and the Western Junior. He qualified for the 2008 U.S. Open at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course and tied for 60th. At one time, he was the top-ranked amateur in the world.
One of the first events on his schedule as a professional will be the Nationwide Tour’s Soboba Classic, which will be held October 1-4 at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto. Fowler also plans to compete in the Albertsons Boise Open beginning shortly after the Walker Cup on September 17.
