Murrieta’s Rickie Fowler finished second at the Nationwide Tour’s Children’s Hospital Invitational over the weekend in Columbus, Ohio, losing to Derek Lamely after making a bogey on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Fowler, a 20-year-old amateur who has announced his intentions of turning pro in September, was aiming to become only the second non-professional winner in Nationwide Tour history. He was in the lead for most of the final round at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course but posted his only bogey of regulation on the final hole to finish at 11-under-par 273. Lamely had posted a stellar 6-under-par 65 to also finish at 11-under. Fowler and Lamely each made par on the first extra hole, the par-4 18th, then headed to the par-3 13th. Both missed the green, though Lamely was able to scramble for a par while Fowler’s par bid did not fall. Lamely, making his 10th career Nationwide Tour start, garnered $139,500 for the victory. Since Fowler was playing as an amateur, he earned no prize money. Despite the runner-up finish, Fowler was pleased with the experience. “[It was] definitely a fun week,” said Fowler, who plans on playing in the U.S. Amateur and Walker Cup before entering his first event as a professional — the Nationwide Tour’s Albertsons Boise Open, which begins Thursday, September 17. He has committed to play at the inaugural Soboba Classic, which will be held near his hometown at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto October 1-4. “I’m looking forward to starting off my pro career out here on the Nationwide Tour,” he added. One of the most decorated collegiate golfers of the decade, Fowler won both player and freshman of the year honors during his debut campaign at Oklahoma State University. His first appearance in a professional event was at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, where he made the cut. |
