After a stellar amateur career, Murrieta’s Rickie Fowler makes his professional debut Thursday in the first round of the Nationwide Tour’s Albertsons Boise Open at Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, Id. Fowler participated in his final non-professional event last weekend, when he went 4-0-0 for the U.S. Walker Cup team to help them attain a 16.5-9.5 victory over the Great Britain & Ireland squad at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. “It was the perfect ending to my amateur career,” he said. The 20-year-old, who signed a multi-year equipment deal with Acushnet and will play Titleist clubs and the Titleist Pro V1 ball, has already enjoyed success on the Nationwide Tour. In August, he led for much of the final round at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational before falling to Derek Lamely on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Fowler also will play in the Nationwide Tour’s inaugural Soboba Classic at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto from Oct. 1-4. “I’m just going to try to play as well as I can at these first few events I have lined up,” added Fowler, who also received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the PGA Tour Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open in Las Vegas next month. Fowler also will be living in Las Vegas. Check back throughout the week to see Fowler’s progress as well as how other Southern California competitors fare at the event, including Torrance native Chris Tidland, the defending champion. |
